A new computer interface from Emotiv Systems makes it possible for users to control virtual objects with just their brainwaves.  Dubbed the EPOC, the interface is simply a headset the user wears in order for it to listen to brainwave activity across the entire brain.  This allows the headset to read what happens in the brain when it thinks, “rotate”, for example.  It’s wireless and connects to most PCs, so the user isn’t stuck to the computer when using it. Currently available in limited qualities in the United States for just under $300, early users have access to the first games and programs developed exclusively for EPOC. These programs range from marketing insights to see how people respond to certain advertisements to controlling an electric wheelchair and creating art using thoughts and emotions.
Co-founder and president of Emotiv Systems, Tan Le, demonstrates the new system at TEDGlobal2010.
