Loose Change Can Really Add Up
Round Up Your Credit Card Purchases with SwipeGood
Donating to charities doesn’t have to be a tough decision, nor does it have to be a lot money. SwipeGood makes this whole process easier by taking the loose change of your debit and credit card purchases, and then giving you the choice to donate that loose change at the end of the month.
Here’s how SwipeGood works. Once you enroll your credit/debit card with SwipeGood, every purchase you make gets rounded up to the nearest dollar. So for a $50.50 purchase of groceries, $0.50 will be given to charity. At the end of the month, SwipeGood will send your total donation amount to the charity or cause of your choice, with approximately 300 charities to choose from. To participate in SwipeGood, consumers have to enroll their credit card and the service will track your purchases. You can set a limit to the amount you want to donate each month, and only one credit/debit card can be enrolled per person.
“There’s too much friction. People have to decide, first what is the right amount to give. Second, what is the right time—now, or at the end of the year, or when the recession is over? Third, finding the right cause where my money will actually make a difference, which organization is going to use my money in the right fashion,” said Steli Efti, one of the co-founders of SwipeGood, in Xconomy. “People have to make a lot of decisions based on very little information. That results in a lot of people postponing or dropping out of the process. We thought, ‘Why isn’t there a simple and elegant solution where I can make giving to charity part of my daily life, something that ties into my normal behavior?’”
