Next Gen 3D Printers Print Stuff Out Of Glass
Sep 7th
3-D printers aren’t new, but what they could print next it what’s worth talking about. Rapid prototypers could now manufacture products made of glass, sand, stone, and clay instead of the usual resin or plastic. This could help inventors churn out their ideas faster and artists and architects create things that weren’t previously possible for them. Most of these printers aren’t yet available to the general public, but require a special order with a specific company.
DIY: How To Build The Iron Man Augmented Reality Kit
Aug 9th
Iron Man the Movie uses Augmented Reality (AR) as a part of the Jarvis vision system and demonstrates it pretty well. The system segregates the view into various objects it can recognize and overlays information on it. This is quite a futuristic view of what AR could do. This is how we could hypothetically achieve it.
$240 TB Detecting Microscope Beats $40000 Lab Microscopes
Aug 6th
What differentiates technology in the common man’s view? The cost. That’s exactly what Rice University’s Andrew Miller has done. The $240 tuberculosis detecting microscope he has created as a part of his bioengineering senior design project is capable of detecting TB sputum smears as well as super expensive microscopes used in labs. The goal behind the portable, battery-operated Global Focus fluorescence microscope was to take the product to the developing world where an estimated 1.8 million people died in 2008 according to the WHO.
The lad built the 1000X microscope out of off-the-shelf parts and a 3D printed plastic casing. Andrew has since worked on the project adding aluminium casing for durability. Lab tests showed that the microscope detected on par with expensive machines 98.4% of the time! He has now partnered with 3rd stone design to create 20 microscopes for field trials.

IBM Builds Animation Cloud for Multimedia Development Corporation
Jul 5th
Cloud based game development was coming to the fore, we know. Now IBM has jumped into this arena in full force. They have actually built an animation cloud for Multimedia Development Corp (MDeC), a Malaysia based company. This means animate anywhere, everywhere. SaaS is the future and the entertainment industry is jumping into the cloud. Makes sense, this helps companies reduce cost of investing in individual workstations for developers and rather invest on creating content. Full press release after the break.
Video: Now Feel “Virtual” Things
Jul 3rd
When was the last time you wanted to touch a 3D object in a video game? A team at the Gify University in Japan has developed a haptic feedback system for interacting with virtual 3D objects. Real 3D kick boxing anyone? The technology also sounds promising for those in the medical interactivity field. Video of the system at work after the break.
