IRL Gaming: Playing “In Real Life”
Apr 4th
“We only started in September [2010], so this has all happened really quickly,” said Matt Brennan, co-founder of IRL Gaming, an app games developer based on a location-based gaming model.
The first game on this new platform is “Zombies“, where players fight for survival in the middle of a zombie apocalypse, while visiting real world locations to progress and to play the game. Users can sign up for a free beta today, but hurry because there are only eight free betas left. The game can be turned on and off by entering a “safe house”, which can be designated as your home or a place of work, or any other regular hangout. This ensures that the game doesn’t “devour” your real life.
Brennan said that IRL Gaming put a lot of research into the game, engaging online communities and asking fans of the undead how a zombie apocalypse would truly unfold.
“Everyone thinks zombies are cool,” he said. “The name ‘Zombies’ is for maximum searchability and to keep its simple”
As part of the Startmate initiative, an Australian-based initiative that grants startups resources to get up and running, Brennan and the rest of IRL Gaming traveled to the U.S. in March to meet angel investors and successful entrepreneurs, and planned to have a demo of “Zombies” by then.
“By April, and hopefully sooner, the app will be available in the Apple Store,” Brennan said.

The Infinite House
Aug 7th
Now that we have been talking about open buildings, making a tiny house fit 3 bedrooms and a clothes drying rack, we thought an advert to apply these principles of space would round the week off quite well.
Hornbach, a German supplier of building supplies has released an advert that tells us about engineering, creativity and a sense of space. That a tiny home can be expanded to fit people and hearts is a rather amazing way of putting 3 stories together while promoting the brand that Hornback stands for. The house is infinite and love is too. Enjoy the commercial after the break.

Extreme DIY: Steam Powered Battery Charger
Jul 27th
We are not surprised. When people can run nuclear fusion reactors at home, there sure can exist some old school tech lurking somewhere in the corner. We have stumbled upon a steam powered battery charger. Before you start cutting yourself up with a butcher’s knife, read up all the low tech involved here.
The steam engine used is a 1903 C&BC 6 HP steam engine. Apparently the builder wanted freedom from fossil fuels and hence the choice of motor. This engine when combined with a custom built coil charges up a 48V battery bank. Enough for those blackout days eh? Hit up the source link after the break for full details.

If you ever made love to a geeky gamer chick this is the condom you should be using. “Play” condoms are retro video game themed condoms with a twist. Now THIS is what gamers have been waiting for- “Donkey Shlong”, “Bone Zone 2″, “Sextrix” and more irresistible titles. 1 play only! Too bad these are just concepts, for now. Come on Durex, get your game on – adults need some innocent fun on their genitals.. Pictures after the break.
Brilliant: Making Staircases Fun
Jul 10th
Which one would you choose at an airport? The escalator or the stairs? Turns out that more people choose the escalator. Humans are lazy. So some crazy folks decided to make climbing stairs more fun. How? By making a piano out of those stairs. Reminds me of the “The New Fast Lane”. Video after the break.
