Startup Talk: Mynamusic wants to index the world’s music, the right way

Remember Google? Yup, Goog is what it is today thanks to its “new” way of indexing the internet. Another startup – Orpheus Media Research wants to change the way music is indexed on the internet through an algorithm so unique and effective that five years from now you will get music recommendation that fits the “mood” you are looking for. It’s a little difficult to tell the computer what a particular mood means since it does not readily understand emotions but that’s exactly what Orpheus wants to do with its product Mynamusic.

Mynamusic is a music search and recommendation engine for commercial use music which has done away with searching for music based on keywords and instead implemented its music tagging algorithm that puts an almost human like music recognition based on some intricate algorithms. What is also unique is that the search algorithm searches music 1000 times faster than current keyword based searches. So when you look for light, happy music you don’t get a bunch of tracks because they were tagged that but because they sound happy and light. Mynamusic was created by veteran in the field of music research – Dr. Greg Wilder and Alison Conrad.

According to Greg and Alison, “Myna is the only pure music-to-music search and discovery platform that uses music to find music, producing higher quality matches and analyzing music up to 1000x faster than existing keyword search technology. Myna combines deep musical expertise with adaptive technology to deliver highly accurate and relevant matches based on mood and emotion. Created by musicians, Myna is the first platform to look at musical context and grammar to understand/interpret musical mood. By referencing the music directly, matches are more accurate and large catalogs of music can be quickly analyzed with or without metatags.”

Saw that post on Tech Crunch on that French rap video featuring facebook? Well, we think the video’s great! What we also think is that all the pokin’ going on in the video – its going to happen soon to mankind. We drew up the blueprint for you to build your own Iron Man 2 augmented reality kit a couple of days ago. But the video is what the future will be like – pokes and likes and what not,all at the move of your hand. Just be a little careful when you are “poking” in a public place though. Still don’t know what we are talking about? Video after the break. As far as Tech Crunch goes, they are interested in the pokes more than the tech I guess

Music: A Very Literal Music Video

Music could mean a lot of things but music videos may skew your POV. However, there is music video that puts across its lyrics quite literally – through everyday pictures and words. Paper cutouts and dictionaries, magazines and posters – whatever it may take to let the meaning of the song be what the listener wants it to be.

The music video of the song – “Sweeth Heart” by The Wave Pictures is directed by Ben Read and uses second hand books to accomplish its task of putting the “lyrics” across, leaving the listener to be the thinker.

The next time you visit a Burger King joint in Japan make sure you carry your iPod along. BK Japan is installing music bowls for customers to listen to their music without headphones. The system is built to isolate sound to individual tables so that every table can have its own ambient sound playing. All you have to do is plug in your iPod or iPhone into the dock and crank up the volume. Innovating doesn’t have to stop at the frying pan you know.

Hollywood’s Latest 3-D Animation Film ‘Despicable Me’ Advances Smarter Movie Production With IBM

HOLLYWOOD, Calif. - 08 Jul 2010: IBM (NYSE: IBM) announced today that it has collaborated with Illumination Entertainment to help it meet the massive production requirements involved in creating its new computer-animated 3-D feature film, “Despicable Me.” The film, which stars Steve Carell as a villain named Gru who hatches a plot to become the world’s greatest super villain, was developed and produced by Illumination Entertainment and is being released by Universal Studios on July 9 in the U.S.

With today’s increased emphasis on animation and visual effects, the digital rendering process has become a competitive differentiator and critical production capability for studios of all sizes. The process involves literally hundreds of thousands of individual images that are created by hand and rendered through digital animation to effectively build each individual frame of the film, all of which requires intensive computing power. For “Despicable Me” the animation process generated 142 terabytes of data — an amount roughly equivalent to the traffic generated by over 118 million active MySpace users or 250,000 streams of 25 million songs.

“‘Despicable Me’ represents a breakthrough in the emerging model of collaborative, geographically distributed digital movie making, which we are proud to be building from the ground up. By seamlessly bringing together creative talent from the U.S., France and other locations around the world via technology, we completed a massive production undertaking that is often left to larger single-location Hollywood studios,” said Chris Meledandri, Producer of “Despicable Me” and founder of Illumination Entertainment. ”Thanks to the capacity of IBM’s rendering technology and the skills of our artists, we were able to bring our creative vision to life through the completion of a wonderfully entertaining film and build the foundation for a large pipeline of projects in development.”

Illumination Entertainment collaborated with Mac Guff Ligne, a Paris-based digital production studio, to complete the 12 months of intensive graphics and 3-D animation rendering, amounting to up to 500,000 frames per week. To complete the project, the team needed to quickly design and build a dedicated server farm capable of meeting these demanding workloads across its 330 person team of artists, producers and support staff. The production team also needed a space efficient, IT solution that was easy to configure, manage and expand. To avoid the potentially high air conditioning costs associated with operating a data center 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, the company also wanted an energy efficient technology platform.

Illumination tapped IBM and its Paris-based Business Partner Serviware to build a server farm based on IBM’s iDataPlex system. With this system’s efficient design and flexible configuration, the company was able to meet the intense computing requirements for the film and save room by doubling the number of systems that can run in a single IBM rack. The entire space used to house the data center amounted to four parking spots in the garage of the production facility, about half of what had initially been allotted. The studio’s iDataPlex solution included IBM’s innovative Rear Door Heat eXchanger, a water-cooled door that allows the system to run with no air conditioning required, saving up to 40% of the power used in typical server configurations. Overall, the installation included 6,500 processor cores.
