Shelby.tv creates customized video channels
Apr 18th
Millions of videos are watched online every day, and some of them were probably recommended to you by a friend or family member. Aggregate all those video links together with Shelby.tv, which creates a customized video channel based on all these recommendations. Your favorite recommendations can even be liked, or tweeted through Shelby.tv. Although it’s still in its alpha stages, Shelby.tv already sees high user engagement, with an average of 15 minutes per user per day.
Essentially, it turns your computer into a personalized television. No more commercials! (Cross fingers)
Shelby.tv was one of 11 startups to be selected to participate in TechStars NYC, a three-month mentorship investment program that takes place in four cities (the other three are Seattle, Boulder, and Boston). These companies get up to $18,000 in seed funding, three months of intensive top-notch mentorship, and the chance to pitch to angel investors and venture capitalists at the end of the program.
TechStars is currently accepting applications, so if you’re a startup in need of funding and mentorship, and are based in one of those four cities, then apply today!

Move Over Airbnb – Localbigwig is here
Sep 4th
Airbnb.com – the home share service can be credited with creating a market that existed only in the nooks and crannies of craigslist but that doesn’t mean competition is far away. Localbigwig, another home share/rental service is here to disrupt this way business is done. While airbnb.com boasts of numbers localbigwig boasts of smaller numbers but “great people”. Their punchline “it’s not the place, it’s the people” clearly puts the message across. What’s the point if the place is pretty but a psycho killer lives there? Localbigwig screens homeowners before a listing and hence is a BIG leap in terms of a sense of security. Guests planning to stay in localbigwig homes will also be screened for security purposes. What also distinguishes localbigwig from the competition is that its provides home owners the support to maintain and clean up their homes once guests have left.
Building a network based on good service for both owners and guests is certainly a great step forward in catapulting the brand beyond just being another player in the industry. Localbigwig is currently limited to the NYC area. They plan to go national very soon. Go check out Localbigwig at localbigwig.com

DIY Nuclear Fusion Reactor. Believe.
Jun 26th
New York is notorious for nuclear projects, first the Manhattan project that produced the world’s first nuclear weapon, now the so called “Brooklyn project” is out to create the world’s first home made nuclear fusion reactor. While we have always thought of nuclear fusion technology to be THE solution to the world’s energy problems, it’s been an entity chased by multinational science teams. But, one Mr. Suppes of “Prometheus Fusion Labs” has built a nuclear fusion reactor in his garage. Yes, you heard it right, in his garage. It doesn’t power his home yet but sure fuses up atoms – the first step to nuclear fusion energy. Don’t believe me? Watch the video.

Video: Wireless Parking
Jun 24th
How often have you gotten out of the comfort of your high rise home at 6 in the morning JUST to feed the parking meter? Trust me, I have, several times. Big cities means big problems parking your car and then keeping the cops from giving you a parking ticket. In comes wireless parking. How about finding a parking spot with that smartphone you have? How about controlling the parking meter with your smartphone? Interesting? Watch.
