EADS Flies An Aircraft On Algae Based Fuel Successfully

Remember the Algae based jet fuel that was supplied to the US Navy for testing? Well, EADS – makers of Airbus have successfully flown an aircraft fueled entirely by an algae based biofuel. The aircraft – Diamond DA 42 New Generation is a small twin prop airplane. The company claims that the aircraft can be dubbed “low emission”. Yeah,we know that – if you are taking off 85% of the emission from the equation, it is indeed a low emission plane.Images of the plane after the break.

If you thought the Chinese were the only ones constructing sustainable buildings, the Dept. Of Energy has some surprise in store for you. The Research Support Building of the National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) has been hard at work constructing a net zero energy consumption building right here in the US. We have all ordered on amazon.com, loads of boxes come in with all out holiday gifts. But what do you do with those boxes? Throw it away? Well, this new “box” called the Lifebox can help you get rid of the throwing-away-a-cardboard-box “guilt” if you may. The box is lined with about 100 seeds. So when you throw the box away into your garden you will see a lot of seed sprout, and grow. Just make sure you nourish them so that they actually grow into trees. Sustainability: World’s Most Sustainable Building

What do you call a building that’s powered by the sun and the wind? It’s called the Wuhan New Energy Center. Coming up in Wuhan, China, the Wuhan New Energy Center boasts to have a zero carbon footprint. The lily shaped building generates its own energy thanks to the vertical axis windmill and solar chimney. The building also harvests rain water within the building. The roof of the building is basically a solar panel array for generating electricity. The design allows the building to be cooled naturally. Designed by the design consultants Grontmij and Soeters Van Eldonk Architects the building will eventually stand 140 feet tall. The Wuhan Lily building is also the first building to be credited to be the world’s most sustainable building title. The building plans to house a research center and labs for researching new energy initiatives. Pictures of the lily after the break.
