Solar Panel Window Panes. What Took Them So Long to Invent It?
Jul 27th
As far as innovation in the solar sector goes, its been super hot. Ideabing has covered solar quite extensively. One thing we were not able to understand is the reason for not having window panes that double up as solar panels. Apparently there is actually one being developed at New Energies Technologies. The real problem

Forget Solar Panels. Solar Balloons Are Here!

Now getting a watt of energy out of a solar panel is one. How about getting 400 watts of output? Yup, a company called Cool Earth Solar is making solar balloons that can harvest 400 times the energy compared to conventional solar cells. These “solar concentrators” focus energy using the curved shape of the balloon on to a solar cell. What this means is that a lot more sunlight gets concentrated on to a solar cell compared to regular solar power plants. The balloon is made out of cheap or even free materials like plastic, aluminium and filled with regular air. Now lets start creating megawatts of energy alright? Image of the balloon after the break.

Yes, its free energy but how does it get rid of poverty? In remote Guatemala where electricity is too precious to be spent on electrifying villages the nights are dark. Dark means no economic activity or too much spending on candles or fuel to keep the light burning through the night. Solar energy is set to change all that in rural Guatemala. A small solar panel costing $200 is transforming lives by providing light at night so that economic activity stays afloat in the dark. Video of the magic after the break.

Solar Impulse Flies On Solar Power for 26 Hours Straight
Jul 9th
We were talking about Solar Impulse’s night flight some time back, now the solar plane has flown night and day non stop. Solar Impulse flew for 26 hours straight powered by the sun. First the plane charged up its batteries by flying at an altitude of 28,000 feet ans then flying lower for night flight. According to the pilot André Borschberg, the batteries still had enough juice for 4 more hours of flight after the 26 hour flight! While this is a big step for flight in general, it’s yet to be seen about solar powered flight’s viability for commercial aviation. While we wait for that to take shape, enjoy the pictures of the flight.
Sustainability: Dept Of Energy Builds A Net Zero Energy Building
Jul 7th
If you thought the Chinese were the only ones constructing sustainable buildings, the Dept. Of Energy has some surprise in store for you. The Research Support Building of the National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) has been hard at work constructing a net zero energy consumption building right here in the US. What this means is that the building can stay off the power grid entirely. The building runs completely on renewable energy. Image of the building after the break.
