Twitter can be kind of clunky to use, running into that fail whale all the time, or sifting through all those new tweets in order to find something good. Now, Twitter can be brought to use with Twisplays, a simple LED sign that lets you broadcast whatever stream you want to broadcast. Whether it’s your own, your company’s, or simply a collection of the streams you follow, Twisplays share Twitter with anyone and everyone, including folks who don’t even have a Twitter account. Businesses can use this as a way to promote their business, offering last minute details and generating easy leads. Those who love Twitter but still want a life can use this in their home to stay up to date with what’s happening in the Twittersphere.

Twisplays are one-line LED signs. They are 26″ long X 4″ high X 1.5″ deep. They weigh approximately 3 lb. They are not completely wireless gadgets, as they still need to be plugged into a computer via USB connection (they also need to be plugged into an electrical outlet, although that’s a given). Twisplays come with mounting brackets and can be screw-mounted on a wall or mounting board or hung from a screw, nail or hook (from a wall or ceiling) and can rest upright on a table, desk or shelf – or placed on a floor or table-top display stand.

Twisplays currently only come in a black casing with scrolling text in alternating colors, so feel free to change the colors to match your company colors or an occasion, like green for St. Patrick’s Day.

Startup Talk: Keepstream tries to reduce social media noise

Some great startups come out of Startup Weekends and better so if you and your buddies cooked up a startup at Case Western Reserve. What started off as CorkShare – a tool to organize your social media streams across twitter and facebook has now evolved into Keepstream. Keepstream helps you organize it. Keepstream is a social media curation tool that helps you collect tweets, Facebook posts, and website bookmarks, and organize them into shareable, embed-able collection pages. This is useful for bloggers, marketers, or just about anyone who wants to curate the chatter from a conference or event, a news headline, or a hashtag chat. But even simpler than that, you can use it to organize your Twitter favorites and retweets, making it easier to share them with your friends or look them up later.

We have setup the Ideabing keepstream page ourselves and it looks as good as gold. Publicly launched in March 2010, Keepstream is a graduate of the Capital Factory early stage startup incubator program.

Startup Of The Day: Twisplays

Originality is key to survival in the social media space - remember facebook’s “Harvard only” stunt? Today’s Startup of the Day is Twisplays, one of the most original ideas we have seen so far. What Twisplays does is allow you to display twitter streams of your choice on a scrolling LED display. Cool eh? And when we say twitter stream of your choice, we mean ANY twitter stream that is publicly available to view. What’s the fun part? Try putting this up at your restaurant and see what your smart phone wielding customers do. Twisplays expects onlookers to respond to these streams quite spontaneously.

Founded by Joshua, an MIT grad Twisplays services the NYC area but they do ship out completely built units around the globe.At this point Twisplays only supports twitter feeds. FB and GBuzz in the future? No one knows. All that we know is that Tiwsplays is capitalizing on the social media blowout that’s going on right now and quite well. BTW, these things cost $299 each (shipped) and fit anywhere a LED scroll display will fit.

A Twitter Account for Your Robot

Robonaut 2 was designed by NASA to help the astronauts with missions and mundane activities around the International Space Station. With 12,000 followers, you too can keep track of R2’s every tweet. According to its Twitter account, R2 is not related to the nefarious HAL 9000 from 2001: A Space Odyssey. It’s also not related to Boba Fett from Star Wars, despite similar appearances. When asked of a possible connection on Twitter, its handlers replied “Sorry, no relation to Boba Fett. Besides, I’m a friendly robot.” R2 also claims no gender, speaks only computer code and English, and plays chess.

When In A Ford, Listen To Tweets Handsfree

Ford introduced the “Applink” interface for the Sync multimedia system some time back. Applink allows users to run apps on their iPhones or Blackberries through voice control connected to the car’s Sync system. The piece of software can read out text messages to users and now it can also read out tweets to them. All this, hands free.

The system does not allow you to tweet back to make sure you don’t think too hard while driving. This is to make sure you are not distracted from your primary job at the wheel – DRIVE. But experts say that this may only lead to the driver reaching out to the phone to tweet back. Now come on, if the system can take voice commands it can also tweet, right?

“Making SYNC even more intuitive and easier to use will encourage more drivers to take advantage of its hands-free capabilities, helping them keep their focus on driving,” said Mark Fields, the Executive Vice President of Ford Motor Company.

The future’s going to be quite interesting given that there’s going to be some augmented reality, some tweeting and some self controlling cars. But for now let’s stick to what we have.

Honk! A Social Network For Buying Cars

Yeah, this was the only thing remaining to use the “social” angle of things. A new startup honk.com lets you choose cars making sure your new car fits around your life. For example, if you choose male, single suggestions vary from convertibles, to coupes to all sorts of flashy cars. And if you choose to be a family guy, the options change. The website also takes into consideration your lifestyle before suggesting a car – like you being an outdoorsy guy with a lot of snow boarding and trekking in your weekend schedule. So if you are the clubbing kind the website suggests cars you can shell out more moolah on. And then there is this whole thing about what the overall package must be to take care of all option mentioned above. And the website has the usual package a social website must have – connects to facebook and twitter and lets you honk your likes and dislikes to your friends. Go check it out here – honk.com

Feature Consolidation Or Greed?

The age of feature consolidation has arrived for big product companies. Apple launched the iPhone OS4 SDK a couple of days ago, Twitter acquired Tweetie and today Twitter announced at the Chirp conference that they will launch their own url shortening service in place of bit.ly One pattern that has emerged out of these is that product companies are now ready to throw the kitchen sink at the user. Another pattern is that product companies are now making their platforms “unique” and hence forcing it upon everyone. Is this the time for feature consolidation?

While Apple maintains the incremental feature upgrade strategy with the iPad hardware (read no camera, no video conferencing, no flash support), it certainly thinks the iPhone is worth the truckloads of features users have been asking for after 3 long years. On the other hand, Twitter has gone for complete dominance. By making Twitter’s own url shortening service “mandatory” if you want to use twitter it is killing off any other url shortening service out there. Apple’s new developer agreement restricting them to creating apps using Apple’s platform does something similar. The acquisition of Tweetie also plugs a hole in the Twitter product – desktop and mobile clients. Both Apple and Twitter have also thrown in hard-to-turn-down advertising platforms since both seem to hate Google’s dominance in that area.

Another take away from these episodes of hole-plugging is that these companies now have products that has gone past the tipping point. No one can stop using these products, leave alone switch to new ones which do the job as well as these do. The next logical step is to bring users and developers into platforms that give them a single window access to everything you needed. Period. You may call it arm twisting but companies call this “higher profits”. Of course these moves come with the threat of law suits but who cares as long as these companies keep making profits for their share holders. What it also means is that the products have matured so much as to make way for new ones (read iPhone 4G and a super Twitter). What we feel bad about is that hapless developers get treated badly after the party is over. Sounds and feels more like greed, not feature consolidation.

Tweet Your Emails. Really!

We have written about some great startups here on Ideabing. But here is one very interesting startup that lets you “tweet-to-email”. The concept’s simple, and very powerful. Say you want to send en email to a bunch of friends but you really do not remember all their email addresses. All you have to do is create a hash tag on tweettoemail.com with all the emails that you want to group mail. Now go to any twitter client and just blurt out the message with the hash tag in place. Wallah! the email gets across to all these people you wanted to get in touch with! This service certainly has legs, both commercially and socially. This could be a great way to get to relief groups in one tweet during a natural disaster, or maybe reach a bunch of friends to get to a pub. We will keep an eye on these folks!

Idea 292: Allow Tweeters To Schedule Their Tweets

There are many Twitter apps available on the internet, but one in particular has caught our eye. Its called “Twaitter“. Notice the Twitter + Wait = Twaitter formula? Yeah, this service lets you schedule your tweets – FREE. Twaitter is web based and lets you tweet your tweets out when ever you want. You are not just allowed to tweet to Twitter but also allowed to post to Ping.fm which means that you have a Twitter tool that lets you be all over the social networking map in one button press! This service is required, especially when you are a lone blogger, like MOST bloggers on the internet. We are so impressed with the service that Ideabing’s primary tweet scheduling service is Twaitter. And yes, they also provide follow management for twitter apart from feed management for your twitter all your rss feeds. Go check it out yourself! its awesome
